Music Theory I at Keen School of Music is a beginner-friendly course designed specifically for middle school and high school students who want to better understand how music works.

This is an intro to music theory class, so no prior theory experience is required. If you are currently taking private lessons, playing in school band or orchestra, singing in choir, writing songs, or just getting started with music, this class will give you a strong foundation.

We follow the Alfred’s Essentials of Music Theory curriculum, a trusted and widely used music theory program. While the book is recommended, you do not need to purchase it to participate and succeed in the class.

Meet the Teacher
Emily Metcalf
Emily Metcalf is a highly experienced musician and music educator with over 20 years of performance experience. She is a French horn player and current member of the CCCB Orchestra in Lebanon. Her background also includes violin, viola, trumpet, operatic voice, musical theater, piano, and music composition, with experience in both classical and jazz styles.
