Biography
Ryder Smith offers students a thoughtful and well-rounded approach to music education at Keen School of Music. Ryder graduated from Middle Tennessee State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Music in Theory and Composition, with a focus in jazz piano. His training includes both classical and jazz studies, giving him a strong foundation as a performer, composer, and teacher.
Ryder graduated from Pope John Paul II High School , where his interest in pursuing music professionally was encouraged by one of his high school music teachers. After taking several music courses during his senior year, Ryder began to develop a deeper passion for performance, composition, and teaching. Inspired by the teachers who helped shape his own musical growth, he became interested in helping other students build their skills and confidence through music.
As a performer, Ryder plays extensively throughout the Nashville area as both a solo artist and in group settings, including jazz, rock, and pop bands. His background also includes participation in the Nashville Youth Jazz Ensemble, as well as the JPII Jazz and Orchestra Ensembles. His musical influences span a variety of styles, with a special appreciation for Bach, Thelonious Monk, Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Gentle Giant, and Keith Emerson.
At Keen School of Music, Ryder teaches piano and music theory to students of all ages and skill levels. His areas of expertise include piano technique, performance, composition, songwriting, arrangement, orchestration, harmonization, sight reading, and music history. His diverse musical background allows him to support students with a wide range of interests, from beginner piano to jazz, classical music, composition, and theory.
Ryder takes a thoughtful and student-centered approach to teaching. He begins by learning what each student wants to gain from lessons, then adapts his instruction to fit their goals, learning style, and musical interests. Because different styles of piano require different techniques, Ryder works to give students clear explanations and practical tools they can use as they continue to grow.
More than anything, Ryder wants his students to leave each lesson feeling encouraged, capable, and excited to keep learning. He emphasizes preparation, steady practice, and patience through the early stages of learning something new. His goal is to help students build confidence at the piano while developing strong musicianship that can support them in any style of music they choose to pursue.
