Fundamentals of Jazz:
History, Theory, & Performance

This course introduces jazz from both a historical and performance perspective. Students will explore major eras and styles, including big band, bebop, cool jazz, and fusion, while learning about influential musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, and Chick Corea.
We will also study the theory behind jazz, including harmony, improvisation, jazz standards, arranging, and ensemble performance. Students will learn how each era influenced the next and what gives each style its distinct sound.
This class is open to teens and adults of all skill levels. Musicians and non-musicians are welcome, including anyone who simply wants to better understand jazz as a genre.

Meet the Teacher
Ryder Smith
Ryder Smith brings a strong background in jazz performance, theory, composition, and music history to this course. He earned his Bachelor of Music in Theory and Composition from Middle Tennessee State University, with a focus in jazz piano, and has studied both classical and jazz music throughout his education.
Ryder has performed extensively throughout the Nashville area as a solo artist and in jazz, rock, and pop groups. His experience also includes the Nashville Youth Jazz Ensemble and the JPII Jazz and Orchestra Ensembles. With expertise in jazz piano, improvisation, arranging, harmonization, composition, and ensemble performance, Ryder offers students a knowledgeable and well-rounded introduction to the history, language, and performance of jazz.
