Piano Lessons
Gallatin TN

Every piano student at Keen School of Music builds the same foundation, starting with note reading and hand position and working into scales, chords, and theory. What changes from student to student is the route we take to get there, whether that means working through a traditional method book or building those same skills out of songs a student already knows and loves. Our piano lessons in Gallatin, TN are shaped around the student rather than the other way around.

Beginner
Guitar Lessons at
Keen School of Music

Beginners start with the basics, including hand position, finger numbers, reading the staff, and keeping a steady beat. Because the keyboard lays out pitch from low to high, students can actually see how scales and chords are built, and that visual clarity is a big reason so many musicians begin here. It is also why parents often ask us whether a child should learn piano first.

Many students work through a method book like Bastien or Alfred, moving in order through reading, technique, and harder pieces, and our teachers will also happily teach from any piano theory book a student already owns. Other students learn better outside a book, starting with a song they love and picking up the fundamentals and chord progressions through the music itself.

Theory comes in early either way, starting with the musical alphabet, whole steps and half steps, how a scales are built, and how chords are built. Students also learn to count rhythms and hear the difference between major and minor. Your teacher spends the first lesson getting to know what you listen to and where you want to end up, then plans from there. If you are still deciding between instruments, our comparison of piano and guitar may help.

Intermediate
and Advanced
Guitar Lessons at
Keen School of Music

If you already play piano, we pick up where you are, and your teacher will listen, fill in the gaps, and build a curriculum from there.

Our teachers will go deeper into music theory at an intermediate and advanced level, covering key signatures and the circle of fifths, how to build and invert triads and seventh chords, how chords function within a key, and more.

Teachers can also teach scales and arpeggios in every key, sight reading, phrasing, and will dig deeper into more advanced songs that you love. The goal is to have you start learning your favorite songs on your own and improve your knowledge and technique.

From there, lessons go wherever you want to take them, whether that means classical repertoire, audition preparation, jazz harmony, improvisation, playing by ear, accompanying singers, or writing your own music. Students who want to play with a group can join our Rock-Ready Program or Fundamentals of Jazz. Recitals are open to everyone and always optional.

Piano Lessons for
Kids

DSCN7990.jpg

We start piano students as young as four years old. Piano keys are laid out in black and white, which makes it easier for young kids to find their way around and find the patterns. Many students are playing a song they recognize sooner on piano than they would on other instruments. Early lessons stay short and active, mixing playing with rhythm games, listening exercises, and songs they already know.

Because both hands share one instrument, piano builds coordination and note reading at the same time, and those skills carry over to whatever a child picks up later. Parents are welcome to sit in or wait in the lobby, and our post on whether parents should sit in during lessons walks through what tends to work best at different ages.

Piano Lessons for
Teens

DSCN7865.jpg

Teens usually come in knowing what they want to play, whether that is a school audition piece, something for a worship team, film scores, or the songs they have had on repeat all year. We teach the fundamentals underneath that music rather than in front of it, so theory lands in context instead of feeling like homework. If lessons need to fit around school and sports, our guide to practice expectations covers what we actually ask for at home.

Piano Lessons for
Adults

IMG_1543.JPG

A lot of our adult students played as kids and stopped, often because the approach was rigid and left little room for the music they actually wanted to play. Others are starting from scratch. Coming back to piano lessons as an adult usually goes differently. Piano lessons at Keen School of Music are built around what you want to learn and how the student learns best, which makes it last. Students set the pace, and if you are wondering whether you have waited too long, you have not. Our flexible scheduling with no contract is what makes it workable.

Why People Love Keen School of Music

"Keen School of Music has been a blessing. They are so caring and we feel right at home there. My daughter takes piano with Ms. Kassie and loves her. She is the sweetest teacher and so encouraging. She not only wants you to play good but feel good about yourself. She gives so much confidence to kids. You can’t go wrong with her or the school."

Google Review - Amanda W.

"I can't say enough good things about this place. I've been taking lessons with Aaron Keen for several years now, and he's helped me fall in love with music over and over again, as we’ve moved from rhythm guitar, soloing, bass guitar, keyboards, and vocals. I love his versatility and can't wait to pick his brain at our weekly lessons. He seems to have an encyclopedic knowledge of all things music."

Google Review - Jason H.

"This is the best place for my son's love of music to be nurtured by wonderful teachers. We look forward to our lesson every week and can't imagine being anywhere else. Everyone is so patient with my son (6) and he loves learning from all the teachers. KK, Aaron and Adam have become family and we are happy to support them."
