Drum Lessons
Gallatin TN

Drums are one of the best instruments to start on, because rhythm is the foundation of every kind of music and a student who understands it carries that with them no matter what they pick up later. We keep two full size acoustic kits at Keen School of Music, so our drum lessons in Gallatin, TN put students behind a real kit from their very first lesson, and you do not need to own one to get started. We teach children as young as four, along with teens and adults, across a wide range of styles.

Beginner
Drum Lessons at
Keen School of Music

Beginners start with the things that make everything else possible, including how to hold the sticks, how to sit at the kit so the limbs can move freely, and how to keep steady time. From there students learn the rudiments, such as single strokes, double strokes, and paradiddles, along with rock and pop grooves that get all four limbs working together. We usually start with beats and songs a student already recognizes, since connecting the practice to real music is what makes a beginner want to keep going, and most students are playing something they know within their first few lessons.

Students will learn how to read rhythmic notation, count subdivisions, and hear how a groove supports the rest of the band, and your teacher spends the first lesson finding out what you listen to before building the lessons around it.

All you need to bring to drum lessons is a pair of sticks, and we sell them at the school along with keeping spares in the lesson room for anyone who forgets. Practicing at home does not require a kit either, since fundamentals can be worked on with a practice pad or honestly with pots, pillows, or anything else you can hit.

Intermediate
and Advanced
Drum Lessons at
Keen School of Music

Once a student can hold a groove without thinking about it, drum lessons turn toward coordination, which means getting each hand and foot doing something different at the same time and keeping it steady while the music moves around you. That work takes exercises and consistent practice, and your teacher will build those into lessons alongside the songs you are working on so the two support each other rather than competing for your time. From there students will work on dynamics, ghost notes, deliberate sticking choices, comfort playing to a click, and the ability to read a chart by recognizing patterns rather than counting through every measure. Double bass is available to any student whose music calls for it.

Many of our intermediate and advanced students are preparing for something specific, and lessons are built around whatever that is, whether it is a school audition, marching band or concert percussion, jazz band, a worship team, or a recording project. Our drum teacher, James Chiodo studied percussion at Belmont University under Derico Watson, Chester Thompson, and Zoro and grew up around drum corps through his father, so students headed toward marching band are working with someone who knows that world firsthand. Drummers who want to play alongside other musicians can join our Rock-Ready Program or the percussion ensemble in our music programs, and recitals are open to every student and always optional.

Drum Lessons for
Kids

DSCN4129.jpg

We start drum students as young as four, and drums tend to suit young kids especially well since the instrument responds immediately and rewards the energy they bring to it. Early lessons keep students moving between the kit and counting games and call-and-response, which builds timing and coordination while holding a young student's attention. Because we keep two full size acoustic kits at the school, your child learns on a real drum set from their very first lesson, and nothing needs to be purchased to get started beyond a pair of sticks that we sell right here. Practicing at home can happen on an inexpensive practice pad, or honestly on pots, pillows, or anything else worth hitting.

Drum Lessons for
Teens

DSCN7868.jpg

A lot of teenagers come to drum lessons wanting to rock out and figure out how their favorite songs actually work, and that is where most drum lessons start. From there they might work toward a garage band, a worship team, a school ensemble, or an audition, and lessons follow wherever that goes. Students already involved in school percussion or marching band often use lessons to develop the kit skills that concert playing does not cover. Teens who want to play with other musicians can join our Rock-Ready Program and rehearse with a full band, and if lessons need to fit around school and rehearsals, our guide to practice expectations covers what we actually ask for at home.

Drum Lessons for
Adults

DSCN7771.jpg

Adults take up drums many different reasons, whether that is finally learning the instrument they wanted as a kid, filling a seat in a church band, or wanting one hour a week that demands their full attention. For a lot of our adult students the lesson becomes a rare hour that belongs to them and nobody else, which is part of why we think of music lessons as a form of self-care. Drumming is also physical in a way most adult hobbies are not, and since practicing at home only calls for a pad rather than a full kit, drum lessons can fit into a house or apartment more easily than most people assume. Lessons move at whatever pace your week allows, and with no contract and flexible scheduling, it stays workable even in a busy season.

Why People Love Keen School of Music

"My daughter has been going to Adam for a little over a year now for drumming lessons and he has truly made it a great experience for her. She has struggled with people giving up on her because of her ADHD in most things she does but Adam has embraced her and helped her find her love of playing. She looks forward to her class each week. I'm so greatful for all of the people at Keen music and all of their kindness."

Google Review - Jennifer P.

"Can’t say enough good things about these folks. Caring, welcoming and most importantly encouraging to all ages and skill levels that walk through their door. You won’t find a more positive learning environment for yourself or your child."
